La Serena y Valle del Elqui

La Serena, Chile - Valle del Elqui

La IV región

I dream to visit every corner of the world, and I know it’s not going to be easy, but I’ll try. When I first moved to Chile I knew nothing about the beauty of the country (all I knew was La Ley), but after the first month here I knew I NEEDED to visit the south, so we went and I fell in love. It is truly mesmerizing but I knew there was more.

This month we visited the IV Region, a desert beachy zone that reminded me a lot of where I come from. We didn’t make any plans, we just drove there and started looking for a place to sleep near the beach when we arrived, at 11pm.

We spent our first day trying to find the flowery desert, total loss of time. After that fail, we decided to enjoy the city, get to know the beach and of course, as a total CA girl, I went for it and played on the beach a few minutes haha. We stayed at Mar de Ensueño right in front of the beach.

We visited this beautiful desert-valley after a lot of rain so there was a lot of flora and also, it’s winter in Chile, so the amazing mountains were covered in snow. I can’t describe how mesmerizing the landscape was, the contrast between cactus, desert and snow blowed my mind.

And if that weren’t enough, at night the sky was breathtaking. We visited the Mamalluca Observatory and took some amazing pictures of the Milky Way. Did you guys know that the north of Chile is one of the best places to see the galaxy?

We stayed at El Molle, in Vertientes del Elqui for one night. The place was amazing, there was a pool, a little river with ducks and we actually saw two lambs running around. After that, we went back to La Serena for another night.

Most of the time we were in the car, driving and enjoying the view. But we did try some really good food at: Heladeria El Cobre, Ciudad Capital, and La Mia Pizza. I have to say I loved the experience, traveling for no special reason and without a plan is challenging and scary, but you learn to enjoy what’s there and stop worrying about the typical stuff. Hope we can go back soon!

Now you tell me:
Have you visited La Serena? What would you like to see in real life?
